Kanye’s “just” a headache lands him in ER

To Kanye West and the all the media reporting “it’s just a headache”

Please stop saying “just” when referring to Kanye West’s hospitalization for allegedly having a migraine. Since when does Kanye “just” do anything?  He doesn’t “just” make music, “just” have an opinion or “just” get married.  So why is his migraine “just” that?  You don’t go the hospital for “just” a headache.  I assume the doctors “just” gave him an Excedrin Migraine and sent him on his way since that’s all we migraine sufferers need, right?!  When Kanye stops his show to preach about discrimination do I say it’s “just” racism?  Of course not, NO, never!  No one should be made to feel inferior, judged on anything but their merit or be made to feel lesser.  I did not choose the color of my skin or to have migraines.  So why is my disease “just” a headache?  36 million people suffer from migraine or is that “just” not enough to recognize that it is a serious illness that needs attention?  While people fight health insurance, unemployment, lack of research, depression and a list of health concerns beyond “just” a headache, the word diminishes us and what we strive for.  I know that Kanye claims to dislike ignorance so please don’t allow yourself or the press to spread it.

  1. I’ve had migraines for 58yrs. I’ve nearly died from a few of them, but I’ve NEVER heard of anyone dying from a headache that was JUST a headache! Please do not “Down-Play” ANYTHING that can be deadly. Cancer is not always deadly, but NO One makes light of Cancer, or any other disease in this category. Migraine is a Neurological Disease. Migraine ranks in the top 20 of the world’s most disabling medical illnesses. A Migraine attack can actually be fatal. An otherwise healthy 21-year-old member of our community died of a Migrainous Stroke in November, 2001. According to the National Migraine Association, more people die each year from Migrainous Stroke than are killed by hand guns. I am one who has had Migraine Strokes. Migraine is one of the most misunderstood, under diagnosed and under treated of all diseases. Here are some articles to read that might help you understand who we are.

  2. I used to say “just” to help non-migraineurs feel not so bad & prevent unsolicited medical snake oil cures when I was an episodic migraineur. Now that I’m chronic intractable migraineur I’ve gained confidence in my abilities to tell people snake oil doesn’t work; I didn’t nothing to cause an attack; and no bathing in perfume doesn’t make you sexy. All I want is 2b_painfree and have #Nomorehandmedowndrugs to abort a migraine.

  3. Wow! This really shocks me. How can a migraine sufferer play down an attack when they seem to play everything else up!?! It really doesn’t make sense. This would have been a great opportunity for Kanye to raise a little awareness of what migraine really is, rather than adding to the stigma & misconception, as well as making himself look like a drama queen! If it was ‘just’ a headache as reported, why did he waste medics time? He has inadvertently portrayed himself in a very poor light! Xx

  4. Does anyone listen to what this guy has to say anyways? Just a headache….hummm. In my city now, no narcotics are given out in any of our hospitals due to druggies coming in looking for a quick fix complaining of a migraine I suppose. So here I am with my 8 straight day/24 hr. migraine, and I’m given 2 Tylenol 3’s. Should have stayed home instead of waiting 10 hours. Frustrating, just gotta suck it up.

    Great article.

      • Yes, I’ve seen many neuros over the years and see one now. He’s pretty much thrown his hands up with no more solutions than his recommended Botox, which I refuse to try due to cost and I don’t want anymore problems (heard Botox can make things worse). I take Topomax for a preventative, and Relpax and have been on a slew of meds over my 40+ years. They are here to stay and I just gotta live with them. The pain clinic in my city is pro Botox also.
