National Puppy Day 2018

Happy National Puppy Day!  Every year I post a picture of my dog.  She is my nurse, my therapy, my medicine and my first child.  As I was locked in my room with a 3 day Migraine from hell, guess who slept beside me?  Guess who kept me company in the middle of the night while the pain was raging?  My dog.  She’ll always be my puppy!  My almost 13 year old puppy!

How I Take Baths for Migraine and Better Health

Self care february (6)Taking a bath has become part of my self care routine.  I typically make the time on Sundays to soak my week away.  When I take a bath I love to create a relaxing and individualized experience.  I fill my bath, light a candle, grab some water and turn on music (some days I love the quiet).

I fill my bath with:

Instead of a candle, I have a lantern made by my daughter. It looks beautiful lit with a battery candle.  I follow my bath up with body butter that’s essential oil mixable but I like it unscented.

The benefits of baths are endless.

Increase relaxation

Boost Magnesium levels (many Migraine sufferers are known to be insufficient)

Reduce stress

Reduce pain and inflammation

Relieve constipation

Increase energy or mental vibrancy

Soothe sore muscles

Eliminate toxins

Sleep better

What do you put in your bath?

How we doctor my dog and she doctors me

This is going to be a short and sweet post. I’ve been sick since Christmas and my brain is feeling less than creative. In fact it’s down right stuffy, pained, exhausted, a bit sad, stressed and frustrated.

So I thought I’d share a fur baby and girl baby story that I think many of you will appreciate….

As I sat with a sinus infection, while experiencing side effects from new meds and my son being sick with constant meltdowns I watched my daughter “doctor up” my dog yesterday.

All she wanted from Santa was a pet vet clinic, she loves animals! I watched my dog wait in the waiting room (yes, that’s my SensaCalm weighted blanket on the couch that I have been hibernating under while I’m sick! Affiliate link)

Then she was seen by the doctor

That evening I missed a big traditional family dinner. As I sat in my dark room, my dog held my hand and kept me company for hours.

The head pain of Migraine is really extreme! All of the other things really suck! And there are a lot of other things (body aches, nausea, cold hands/feet/nose, etc)! One of the hardest things is being alone and missing out though! It’s really hard!

My dog is more than a dog, especially during these times. She is my sanity and a soul that is literally by my side during dark times. Anyone who has cried holding their pet can understand the depths of this bond.

I’m so proud that my daughter is such an avid animal lover. She gives and receives love in the biggest way and has the biggest heart. Seeing her show the love and compassion that my dog shows is something really special! ❤️❤️

Anyone else spending extra time with their fur baby being sick this Winter break?

Am I the only one fighting being sick while having sick children?

Enjoying unscented bath products to fit my sensitive smell needs with Aromafloria

IMG_1537.JPG

*This post contains affiliate links. My opinions are my own and I will receive compensation for my referral. I was given the unscented line for review. See disclaimer

I am highly sensitive to scent! Because of this, I am particular about bath products I use.  Fake over scented products make me sick!  I previously reviewed Aromafloria’s Muscle Soak. I love their products!  The bath products were subtle and soothed my muscles.

I keep the inhalation beads in my purse and recommend them for times when the environment is filled with trigger smells.  The inhalation beads are a quick smell for relief.

Recently I have become more interested in essential oils and mixing my own products.  Some days I enjoy a scent, other days I benefit from another oil and some days I want NO SMELL.  When I received unscented products from their mixology line I used them in a variety of ways. Simply,

  1. “Select your preferred base product.
  2. Add your preferred essential-oil blend.
  3. Mix, smell and enjoy.”

The unscented line provides so many options for so many needs.  I keep the bath & shower oil in my shower. It deeply penetrates and hydrates before I step out of the shower.   I love the salt scrub with oils to provide a spa like feeling.  The massage oil works great for my aching muscles and is perfect mixed with relaxing and healing oils.  The body butter is luscious and smooth.  I use it completely unscented and love the hydration it provides without smelly trigger perfumes.

The ability to alter these products with oils and to use scentless is such a luxury! If you or a loved one is sensitive to smell, I highly recommend these products!

Here’s the exciting news…..

Aromafloria is giving away an amazing prize pack just for My Migraine Life followers!

Migraine glasses and coupon code for light sensitivity help

axon coupon

For those of you looking for glasses to help with photophobia, light sensitivity and migraine triggers, I highly recommend Axon Optics!  I have been wearing Axon Optics for several years now.  With all the reviews I have done, Axon Optics are one of my favorites.  They are my favorite because I need and wear them often.

Because of my love for them, there are *affiliate links in this post. I will be rewarded with a small commission and you, hopefully, will be rewarded with eye strain and migraine relief. I really benefit from their glasses and recommend them without being influenced. I am not a doctor so please refer to your doctor or optometrist for concerns. See *disclaimer for more details.

Natural Relief

I wear both indoor and outdoor glasses.  They are beneficial in their own ways. Axon Optics uses FL-41 tint that has been proven to help with conditions associated with light sensitivity. “It successfully blocks the distressing portion of the light spectrum, which bothers light sensitive people and causes cumulative eye damage over a lifetime.”

Where I wear them:

  • Outside
    • sunny days, cloudy days, rainy days, bright snowy days (all weather!)
  • nside
    • shopping, at home, at work, at sporting events (any where with fluorescent lights)

Basically, I wear them everywhere.  I keep my indoor pair in my purse for all events and keep my outdoor ones in my car.

Additionally, Axon Optics has amazing customer service.  They can and will answer your questions immediately. They want you to get exactly what you need for your specific needs!  They are a company that wants to help and they do!

They are so generous that they are offering MyMigraineLife readers a coupon code to use for yourself or a gift for a loved one.  Order them today, I think you’ll love them!

Using a Weighted Blanket for My Migraine Needs with SensaCalm

IMG_1531

This product was given to me as a product review and contains affiliate links. My opinions are my own and I only recommend products I use and love. See disclaimer

A few years ago I taught children with many special needs.  During this time, I saw how incredibly powerful specialists are.  Physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, adaptive physical education and music.  The list goes on with how many ways there are to treat various needs.

I saw first hand how a weighted vest calmed a child.  For some reason I never considered sensory integration therapy for my migraines until recently.  I was laying on the couch with a migraine and under a blanket. I was restless with muscles clenched and in pain.  I was also cold so I piled a bunch of blankets on myself. I felt the weight wash over me and help calm my body a bit.

I realized I may benefit from a weighted blanket. After searching, I found SensaCalm.  The “weighted blankets, wraps, and lap pads provide the user with soothing, deep pressure and compressions, allowing the user to relax and calm themselves.” The variety of choices was fun to look through and blankets can be custom made.

My blanket has a “cuddle” fabric and is incredibly soft! I love this blanket!!! Like all therapeutic products, it is not cheap.  The blanket is an investment in my treatment. Rest and comfort, especially during migraine times, I need extra sensory input. The blanket will not stop a migraine but treats my overall pain and discomfort in my body. I now use this blanket everyday and recommend it to anyone with sensory needs.

SensaCalm also offers various toys and accessories.  While scrolling through, I ran across the epsom salt soap. “Epsom salts are known to provide a dose of magnesium through the skin (which people with autism tend to be short on).” Migraine sufferers also tend to be short on magnesium.  I use the lavender bar in the shower for days I don’t have time to take a bath (which are most days). It is made of a variety of natural ingredients made to draw out toxins and calm.

SensaCalm is a new item added to my gift list and I look forward to enjoying it all winter and year round. It has been an amazing addition to my Migraine tool kit at home. Like all products, please consult your doctor and see the safety guidelines provided by SensaCalm.
