Here it is….that time of year where the leaves are changing, the air is getting crisper and it’s time to donate.  During the Fall, I participate in many charity walks and Runnin’ for Research is one that makes me feel like I’m making a difference for my own cause

The last 2 years I have participated virtually.

2015

2016

Runnin’ for Research, Inc. (R4R), was founded in 2015 as a charitable organization dedicated to research, awareness, empowerment, and advocacy in all areas of headache and migraine disorders. The primary mechanism to accomplish the missions is the organization and implementation of 5K runs and walks throughout the United States.

Contributions to R4R are used to recruit, support, market, and manage local race events with all proceeds from these events being used to support the missions of the organization. In 2016, R4R completed three run/walk events, including Morgantown, West Virginia; Louisville, Kentucky; and Kansas City, Missouri. Donations totaling $48,000 were given to various organizations, including the American Migraine Foundation, National Headache Foundation, Migraine Research Foundation, American Brain Foundation, and the American Headache and Migraine Association. Other entities may be supported upon request if they align with the mission of R4R.”

Runnin’ for Research is now an independent 501(c)(3) organization. Their mission is to “To improve the quality of life of those who suffer with headache and migraine disorders through fundraising for quality research and the promotion of patient empowerment, community awareness, and local and national advocacy.”

Miles for Migraine virtual walk and race dates 2017

miles for migraine swag

In June, I did a virtual challenge to raise money for Miles for Migraine.  “Miles for Migraine is a registered 501(c)(3) Non-Profit with the mission of improving the lives of migraine patients and their families, raising public awareness about headache disorders, and helping find a cure for migraine. Miles for Migraine produces fun walk/run events, typically 2 mile walk and 5k and 10k race to raise money for migraine research. We also host youth camps for kids and teens impacted by migraine or other headache disorders.”

I made the goal of raising $300 for the 3 years I’ve been blogging and I’m happy to announce we met that goal and exceeded it!  Thank you to those who donated!  Migraine is terribly underfunded and every dollar goes a long way towards fellowship programs for training new doctors as well as research. THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

For those of you that missed the fundraiser and would like participate yourself, I have a few more opportunities for you.

Virtual Race                       Anytime!

Keep moving!  I have more race dates coming for Runnin’ for Research in which I participated last year.  I hope you are motivated to take one step at a time and each day get a bit stronger.  As a chronic migraineur, I feel like one day I step forward, the next I’m knocked back down .  The most important thing is that I take that step forward again…..

Mile for Migraine charity walk/run 2017

This year, I started a virtual team for Miles for Migraine. “Miles for Migraine is a registered 501(c)(3) Non-Profit with the mission of improving the lives of migraine patients and their families, raising public awareness about headache disorders, and helping find a cure for migraine. Miles for Migraine produces fun run events, typically 5k and 10k races to raise money for migraine research, and also hosts youth camps for kids and teens impacted by migraine or other headache disorders.”

I love this race because we all can participate virtually.  My goal is to raise $300 in honor of my blog being 3 years old this summer!

Please go to my pledge page and make a donation if you are able.  All or part of your donation may be tax deductible as a charitable contribution.

The fundraiser will go through the month of June in honor of Migraine Awareness Month.  If you’d like to see me reach a goal, please specify and I will do my best to honor it.  If you’d like to make a miles goal, please take a picture of yourself making those miles for My Migraine Life and I will happily post it and give encouragement as always.

The great part is, no race day, no big commitment, just motivation.  If you don’t have the money to donate, please participate by walking a mile or moving one day and tag me in your success.

I want to thank any of you in advance for your donation and participation.  The smallest amount makes the biggest difference. THANK YOU!

To improve the quality of life of those who suffer with headache and migraine disorders through fundraising for quality research and the promotion of patient empowerment, community awareness, and local and national advocacy.

Here it is….that time of year where the leaves are changing, the air is getting crisper and it’s time to donate.  During the Fall I participate in many charity walks and Runnin’ for Research is one that I added to my list last year. https://mymigrainelife.wordpress.com/2015/10/09/running-for-research-and-icing/

“Runnin’ for Research, Inc. (R4R), was founded in 2015 as a charitable organization dedicated to research, awareness, empowerment and advocacy in all areas of headache and migraine disorders. The primary mechanism to accomplish the missions is the organization and implementation of 5K runs and walks throughout the United States.

Prior to its founding as a 501(c)3 organization, R4R operated as an entity of the American Headache and Migraine Association (AHMA), starting in 2014, and completed two cycles of races. In total, over $25,000 was made available to AHMA to distribute as warranted. Contributions to R4R are used to recruit, support, market, and manage local race events with all proceeds from these events being used to support the missions of the organization. Examples include support of the American Migraine Foundation, the American Headache and Migraine Association, and the Alliance for Headache Disorders Advocacy. Runnin’ for Research is now an independent 501(c)(3) organization.

How you can participate:

http://www.runnin4research.org/upcoming-races.html

Runnin’ for Research will be run in Kansas City, MO, Morgantown, WV, and Louisville, KY on October 8th.

Each location will offer:

5K run/1 mile walk to raise funding for headache and migraine research.

1 Mile walk non-competitive, untimed event.

“Virtual Runner” for anyone who wants to take part, support our event, but can’t actually be on site.  You can choose to run a 5K or walk a mile while the event occurs, or rest at home knowing you are supporting a great cause.  Of note, virtual runners will not be sent a race t-shirt.

Last year and this year I will participate as a virtual runner.  I am not a runner so I will be walking and donating to R4R on October 8th in my own location.  I encourage you to donate!  If you are unable to donate, I encourage you to go out and walk that day sending positive vibes to all those effected by Migraine and headache disorders.

If you participate that day, please #mymigrainelife and tag @mymigrainelife on facebook, instagram, and twitter to spread the social media buzz about the event.  I look forward to seeing your pictures and reading your stories!

Migraine Research Foundation fundraiser, “Haturday for Heads”

untitled

Recently I was contacted by a woman named Katherine (Katie) Janquart. She lives in Boise, Idaho and is a fellow migraine sufferer. She was first diagnosed with migraines in her teens and has had chronic migraines for the past 15 years. She decided early on in her migraine journey that she wanted to be an advocate for people like me.

Last year she formed a group called Migraine IDAHO and launched a page on Facebook. Her vision for Migraine IDAHO is to offer support, awareness and information on migraines. She also believes that one of the biggest ways she can help people with migraines is to help fund research. Last year Migraine IDAHO did an event on the second Saturday in April called “Haturday for Heads.” She had a local restaurant donate part of their sales for the day, a silent auction and a crazy hat contest. All the proceeds went to the Migraine Research Foundation and they worked with the Chronic Migraine Awareness organization.   I love this idea and the Migraine Research Foundation.  Last year I ran my own Jamberry fundraiser for MRF and feel that research is crucial in helping migraine sufferers.  I am happy to support “Haturday for Head” and hopefully you will participate too.

This year she will still have a get together at the local restaurant where part of the food purchased will be donated. She wants to blow last year out of the water and make “Haturday for Heads” an event that people will remember and look forward to in following years. If you are in the area, please stop by to support.

Since the event is named “Haturday for Heads” a hat with a special design specific to this event will be available for purchase. On the day of the event anyone who has a hat, can post pics in their hat no matter where they are in the world and be a part of the event.

We believe that this event can raise awareness. We both are dreamers and reaching for the stars hoping to unite migraine sufferers all across the word so that their voices can be heard. I am happy to support Katie and her efforts to raise money for Migraine Research Foundation. Please share this and participate in whatever way you can.   If you are unable to participate please share it and spread the word.

Thank You!

Move for migraines. Donating for my own cause with American Headache and Migraine Association fundraiser

It’s that time of year. Fall crisp air, pumpkin, cinnamon, apples and of course charity walks. Every year I like to donate my time and money to support so many worthy causes. It seems like every weekend there are fundraisers for this or charity walks for that. It’s a feel good day to get bodies moving and spread awareness for a cause. I do them often and take my children to teach so many important lessons.  It’s about how many people need help and how we can help others. After all of these years I have never done a charity walk for my own cause, my mom’s cause, for my grandmother’s cause, or for my fellow sufferers. It has actually put a bit of a damper on some of my charitable days when I hear the statistics of how these foundations are funded and how incredibly underfunded the cause that I am fighting is.

So tomorrow is my chance to “move for migraines.” I am virtually going to be a runner/walker for the American Headache and Migraine Association. It is a 5k run/1mile walk to raise funding for headache and migraine research. This year it is being held in Morgantown, West Virginia and I will not be able to attend. I will, however, be a virtual runner. Anyone can be a virtual runner to support the event. This is why I am calling it “move for migraines” for anyone who wants to participate in my challenge.

Running is not my favorite thing. As a teenager, running was a punishment or conditioning for whatever sport I was playing for the season. I never felt the love of running but did it for the love of my sport. I do, however, workout in other ways and feel that it is so important for everyone to move to whatever extent they can best achieve. Chronic pain severely inhibits the ability to workout. I know at times, for me, working out helps and other times it intensifies my migraine to a much higher level. So here’s my challenge: Tomorrow I want you to move. Move and do something with thoughts of a headache and migraine sufferer. If you can’t run, walk. If you can’t get out of bed, do some stretches. Do more than you normally would, for longer than you may normally do. Just move. I’m going to jog and walk with my family, even though it looks like it’s going to be chilly and I really dislike the cold! We are going to move tomorrow to honor all of those who suffer. And for once we are going to be doing it for me too! I give so much to so many people and I’m excited to support my own cause. I fight it every day, why not do something that makes me feel better about it?

Here is the link to become a virtual walk/runner.

If you are unable to donate, I’d still like you to “move for migraines” and tell me how you did. I’d love a picture in the comments of you moving and/or a note about who you moved for. The importance, to me, is not making you feel excluded for not wanting/being able to donate. The importance is to move and do something positive with and for migraines. I think it’s a step in a good direction. Even if it’s only a step, it’s a step! Remember that.

Thank you to anyone who donates but most of all any participates. It will fill my heart to know maybe a few more people moved a bit more thinking of helping our cause!
