EnviroKlenz review, products for chemical sensitivity and allergies

As a follow-up to Migraine and Allergies I have changed a few things in my house to lessen our allergens.

·         For the summer, we will keep the windows closed and use the air conditioning

·         We take our shoes off when entering the house and wash hands immediately

·         When coming in from playing outside, my son showers and changes his clothes before bed and nap

·         All beds are covered with allergen pillow cases and bed sheets

·         We installed a new HVAC air cartridge

I was given the HVAC air cartridge as part of a product review through the Chronic Illness Bloggers network. Although the product was a gift, all opinions in this review remain my own and I was in no way influenced by the company.

EnviroKlenz Natural Cleaning Products

The first thing that struck me about EnviroKlenz, was the variety of products I can use in my home.  They are geared for chemically sensitive like myself, along with those with allergies and suffer from respiratory problems like my son.  I have a lot of problems with many cleaning agents that trigger my migraines through smell and harsh chemicals and generally look for natural cleaners and eco-friendly cleaning products. I don’t like my children and dog smelling fumes so EnviroKlenz sounded like what I need for my house.

Being very sensitive to odor, a mom and pet owner I was interested in their odor neutralizer and eliminator.  The neutralizer is a green cleaning product that can be used for cleaning and removing vomit odor, spills and odors from carpets and solid surfaces, liquid spills in cars, pet mess, pet urine and more.

I was also drawn in by the laundry enhancers. EnviroKlenz works along with normal detergent to enhance its ability to remove tough odors but contains no masking agents or fragrances.

The product I chose to review was the HVAC air cartridge. I was most excited about how the air cartridge removes VOCs and odors from my home.

What are VOCs?

“Volatile organic chemicals (VOC) encompass a wide range of compounds. These chemicals range from slightly hazardous organic solvents up to highly toxic and corrosive acids. They can be found in most industrial and household settings, and can pose a serious hazard for a prolonged period of time in an indoor environment. In addition to organic compounds, there are also a wide range of additional toxic volatile compounds which are commonly found in the home.”

EnviroKlenz HVAC filter destroys noxious chemicals and odors.  It is a non toxic air cleaning product.  Their HVAC filter neutralizes odors and VOCs preventing them from returning into indoor air space.  Their products are made from metal oxides which are considered safe compounds found in safe consumer and food products.

I feel at ease knowing my HVAC air cartridge is providing me with clean air.  At home, I want my children to be their safest and healthiest being I control their environment and what’s in it.  With EnviroKlenz I have taken one step closer to doing so.

I recommend EnviroKlenz for anyone looking for odor elimination products, air purifier for allergies and eco-friendly home products.

Organic Aromas oil and diffuser review

Affiliate disclosure: Some of the links on this blog are affiliate links.  This means if you click on the link and purchase I will receive affiliate commission.

Everyone seems to be talking about essential oils and what they can do for you.  I have been looking into them for a while and am so lucky to have the opportunity to try Organic Aromas Designer Series Essential Oil Blends Luxury Gift Set and Raindrop – Essential Oil Diffuser for Aromatherapy.

After speaking with the makers of Organic Aromas, it was clear to me that safety while using essential oils is important to them.  Buying from a distributer like Organic Aromas or other reputable companies is important and risks may increase if you are using cheaper brands.  The oils are intended for inhalation reasons which has low risk of safety concerns.  As always, I keep all products away from my children and dog.

The bottles are stored in a sturdy classy looking case.  The variety offers different relief for my different feelings and sensitivities.  I am super sensitive to smells during a migraine attack and often can’t stand smelling anything.  When I have a headache or low grade migraine, I find certain essential oils to be relaxing and therapeutic.  Depending on how I’m feeling and what I’m doing depends on my preference of smell.  That’s why the Luxury Gift Set is so wonderful!  Variety is the spice of life and I have a variety of needs to go with my variety of oils.

After trying them, I have been able to split them up into how I like to incorporate them throughout my day.  Everyone’s preferences to smells are very different.  You will need to do a trial for yourself and find what works for you.  This is how I generally use them….

Morning:

Energy-Any extra boost in getting some energy in the morning is always helpful.

Passion-I like to start my day with passion, drive and the smell of motivation to start my day or feel better.

Afternoon:

Purity-This scent is nice during the day because it smells clean.  There’s something about my house smelling clean that makes me feel better

Burglars- This is a homey smell that smells of spices.  I used to like cinnamon candles but found that many of them made me sick.  Diffusing burglars is a better alternative to my love of Fall smells.

Bedtime:

Serenity- What better time to be serene than when you are sleeping?  I start my day passionate and energetic and fall asleep serene. (Well that’s the hope, right?)

Signature blend-My favorite!  I love this smell; it is my go to oil.  The signature blend was included in the diffuser which was a perfect scent to start my adventures with Organic Aromas oils.

The raindrop diffuser is a pretty and light weight wood base with glass raindrop top.  The product arrived in a protective box with padding and velvet case for the pieces.  A detailed information and instruction manual was provided including cleaning instructions.

The diffuser does not use water or heat.  It nebulizes the oils allowing the diffuser to disperse oil with its full smell and therapeutic properties.  For more information on how the diffuser works, go here….  Although there is no water vapor being pushed out, I was surprised at how much the raindrop diffuser was pushing out the oil and smell.  No mess with less chance of spillage.

An aspect of the diffuser that I like is the ability to turn it low to high.  Generally,  noise is a trigger and escalates my migraine.  If it is turned up all the way, the diffuser makes noise and turns off automatically turning back on when needed.  The nice thing about the diffuser is that  I can alter the amount of smell and noise that is being dispersed.  It is quiet, overall, but when my sensitivities are high, it’s nice to have options.

A concern I had with the diffuser was the constant light.  Although it is beautiful, I am highly sensitive to light especially with a migraine.  The great news is, I find it to be soothing and NOT triggering.  It is subtle and pretty and not bright enough to bother me in my bedroom where I like it dark.  It’s  pretty in the kitchen or other areas of the house.

I use Organic Aromas diffuser and oils  daily.  I  find it to be  versatile and pleasant. I love using it at night next to my bed and other places in my house.  Sometimes I need to slow down, take a deep breathe, and breathe and Organic Aromas is a perfect fit.

Organic Aromas is doing a GIVEAWAY, enter today to get oils and purchase the diffuser to breathe the luxury!

Aromafloria, helping me relax with essential oil bath products

IMG_7300 (1)

I have been given this product as part of a product review through the Chronic Illness Bloggers network. Although the product was a gift, all opinions in this review remain my own and I was in no way influenced by the company.

Aromafloria delivers finely crafted, artisanal quality body care and aromatherapy products.  I was approached by Aromafloria to review their Muscle Soak collection.  This collection restores vitality with essential oils of eucalyptus, peppermint, and lemongrass. These nourishing formulas soothe sore muscles, ease tension and leave you feeling energized.  Knowing that I like eucalyptus and peppermint already, I knew this was the line for me.

This summer I have decided to cut down on my workouts and focus more on relaxation and taking care of my skin.  These products allowed me to do so.  Here is a breakdown of all the products I tried:

Aromafloria

Muscle Soak- Ocean Mineral Bath Salts

Restore a sense of well-being to ease sore muscles with an aromatic steaming bath infused with healing essential oils and muscle relaxing sea salts.

The bath salts were a real treat to me.  I never take the time to take a bath and reviewing these forced me to relax.  I found that that the salts dissolved easily and had a light pleasant aroma.  I have used over powering products in the bath before and this one is subtle and not too strong to soak in for a lengthy bath.

Muscle Soak- Foaming Bubble Bath

The Muscle Soak Bubble Bath’s essential oils of Eucalyptus, Peppermint and Lemongrass are fresh, cooling and invigorating.

My children helped me review the bubble bath.  They love bubble bath and were thrilled with  the lush foamy and pleasant smell.  I felt good about allowing them to use the eucalyptus bubble bath when my son has sensitive skin and sinus issues.  His skin was soothed and breathing was clear after soaking and playing in the bubble bath.

Muscle Soak- Sugar Salt Glow Body Scrub

Cleanse away fatigue and invigorate the body and soul with refreshing cool herbs and aromas to leave your skin softly polished and younger feeling.

This was my favorite!  I love scrubs and this one was great!  Once again, it was a lovely light aroma.  I enjoyed the fine scrub and how it was not messy.  It stuck to my skin and allowed me to exfoliate without splashing it all over the shower or it chunking up and falling to the drain.  It left my skin smooth and slightly moisturized and not dry.  It is so gentle I used it daily and concentrated on areas of bumps or imperfections on my skin.  The only problem is how quickly I have been using it!

Muscle Soak- Bath & Body Massage Oil

Relieve tired muscles from aches and pains with an icy hot massage with Muscle Soak Bath & Body Massage Oil.

This one I used on my husband.  He is at a desk job all day and gets a lot of back and shoulder pain.  I treated him with the body oil and a massage and he now requests it often.

Sinus Help- Inhalation Beads

The decongestant and cooling properties of essential oils have been shown to help clear stuffy nose and enhance breathing.

These came very in handy!  After receiving all of the Aromafloria products, I went into a migraine cycle followed by a sinus infection and pink eye.  The pressure in my face was extreme.  I helped treat myself with baths (and salts) along with breathing the inhalation beads.  The sinus beads are pretty strong.  The first time I breathed deeply with them my eyes watered from the essential oils.  I brought the beads with me when we were outside to help clear my sinuses and allow me have some relief as the allergies grew.

Sleep Ease- Inhalation Beads

The restorative properties of essential oils have been known to help quiet the mind and calm the body for healthy, natural sleep.

These beads are not as strong as the sinus beads.  They are pleasant and relaxing.  I plan on adding these to my travel bag.  The smells of airplanes and the people surrounding me often trigger migraines.  I also will use them before bed in the dry air conditioned hotel.  They are relaxing and help calm my migraine brain before bed.

Overall, I loved trying all of the Aromafloria products.  Being under the weather and pampering myself with these soothing products allowed me to feel more energized and vibrant.  As a busy mom, quality bath products are like an escape to the spa in the comforts of my home.

Migraine is a neurological disease

Migraine is a neurological disease caused by genetics and a hypersensitive brain.

This is an especially important fact for me.  My mom and grandmothers both suffered from Migraines.  I remember my grandpa being very sensitive to me suffering after he saw my grandma suffer on the couch with a wet cloth for so many years.

I  am a mom that worries daily about the fact and  possibility of passing it on to my sweet babies.  It was one of the first thoughts I had when I found out I was having a girl and knowing her chances would be higher.  I observe her constantly for signs of Migraine.  I make sure my children eat well, have a constant sleep schedules, show them stress relief techniques and more.  I try my best to teach them the importance of health but am fully aware that I can not change their genetics that I passed on.

The hypersensitive brain is something that makes me feel sane.  For many many years I felt crazy for the ailments I have.  I always thought it was an abundance of different things, the idea that I wasn’t truly sick or that everyone else felt that bad and it was normal.  Once I learned about the scope of migraine and that it is my brain being hypersensitive, I was able to understand myself.

When I get asked why all the treatments I have tried don’t work, the answer is clear…..I can’t change my genetic makeup.  I can try to control it, prevent it, treat it, and live with it.  I won’t be cured.  This is a fact that many need to understand.  I suffer and many generations suffer.  It’s genetics and a hypersensitive brain.

I am hypersensitive to light, sound, touch, smell, heat, cold, weather, stress, hormones,  and more.  I get triggered by things people would never notice.  Once I’m triggered my brain becomes more sensitive.  Once I have had a migraine, I am at a higher risk for another one since my sensitivity is heightened.  This often throws me into a cycle because of medication rebound and my hypersensitivity not calming down.  It is very complex and difficult to deal with.

The brain is a very tricky thing.  A migraine brain seems impossible!

The Excedrin Migraine Experience commercial

I have to say, I have not been happy with Excedrin Migraine commercials and advertising over the years.  I have not taken over the counter medication for my migraines in years.  Once I discovered it was giving me rebound headaches and causing my migraines to cycle, I stopped.  They never worked for the intensity of my migraines anyways, so it was not a problem to stop wasting my money.  I have been insulted by their, “shhhh mom has a migraine, not anymore now that I took an Excedrin Migraine” commercial.   It extends the stigma by saying I can pop one pill and my neurological disease will go away.

Things seem to have shifted in their advertising and understanding of migraine sufferers a bit more.  They have made a series of migraine experiences for a mother, a husband, a friend and a co worker.  This allows the person to experience the visual part of migraines a bit more.  Telling and seeing are different.  The experience cannot provide the pain that comes along with the visual disturbances but it does a good job of trying to break down some doubt in the “it’s just a headache” world.  I honestly would not want my loved ones to experience the pain that I have.  It would be ethically wrong to voluntarily torture someone.  The pain is an indescribable excruciating horror scene!   The focus of these commercials is on some of the other stuff that goes along with the pain.

Overall, I have to say, bravo Excedrin Migraine.  You are moving in the right direction.  It’s more than just a headache.  It’s more than just a pill.  It’s my life.  It’s breaking down stigma, explaining and being judged by others, and suffering daily.  If you have a loved one, a spouse, a coworker, a friend or someone who may better understand by these commercials, please feel free to share it with them.

The Migraine Experience

Follow up on Hannah and her service dog

piper

If you remember, I helped with a GoFundMe campaign for a Chronic Migraine sufferer, Hannah, to receive a service dog.  (see here)  Hannah is  17 years old.  She has been plagued with migraines which have had serious side effects and consequences on her life.  Last year she was homebound schooled due to the severity of her migraines.  Because of this, Hannah and her mom searched out a dog training program that specializes in scent training.  It is very rare to find a place that can train a migraine dog and Pawsabilities Unleashed was a Godsend to their family.

pipers first day

Hannah and Piper’s first day together!

Hannah has had Piper for 8 months now.  As most dogs do, Piper has become part of the family.  But this dog is so much more!  Piper alerts Hannah of a spike in migraine and gets her to a safe place.   As I do, Hannah lives at about a 5 (pain level) at all times and Piper alerts her if it will spike.

piper hugs

Piper telling Hannah to take her meds and Hannah telling her ok.  Her migraine spiked 20 minutes later

She is trained to smell the chemistry change in Hannah before Hannah feels the migraine spiking which allows her time to take her medication. Because of Piper, Hannah is now able to go to school for part of the week.  She was able to go to Homecoming with her boyfriend (and Piper) and participate in more than she had previously.

after hannah fell

Hannah in the hospital after she fell.  Piper is watching the nurse log medication

Piper has been a lifesaver to Hannah and provided her so much support.  During one of Hannah’s episodes, she fell in the bathroom.  Hannah’s mom received a phone call from Hannah that was unrecognizable and jumbled.  When Hannah fell, Piper was able to retrieve the phone (although she was not formally trained to do so) because Hannah was unable to get up.  After Hannah’s mom rushed home, she found Hannah laying on the floor with Piper standing by her side.  Piper had been dropping a stuffed animal on Hannah’s face to keep her conscious.  This is only one example of how important Piper has been to Hannah and her family.

make a wish

Hannah receiving her message in a bottle telling her she received a Wish for a cruise!

Hannah now has been granted a wish from Make a Wish!  Her condition is progressive and debilitating which qualified her for a wish.  It was a long process of meetings with her doctors and back and forth between Make a Wish.  Hannah’s wish needed to not only accommodate Hannah’s medical needs but also be cognizant of Piper’s needs.  The family will embark on a cruise in January!

Hannah’s story can teach so many lessons.  The fact that a service dog can be trained to smell an oncoming migraine is absolutely astonishing and encouraging to me.  As you all know, I am a huge dog lover and understand the power of a pet. (see my dog story)  I hope that this inspires parents to search out more options for their children who suffer and to advocate in every way possible.  Receiving a Wish or a service dog are options that I didn’t know existed for migraine sufferers.  I hope that by sharing Hannah’s story so many can learn and be inspired to find more answers or be lead down another path.
